How do you recognise and care for dehydrated skin?

The hot summer temperatures often cause a general lack of moisture and water, which also affects your skin. However, there are many other reasons why your skin may lack water: Diet, caffeine consumption, too little fluid, but also hormonal fluctuations.

People with a more oily and oily skin type can also develop a dehydrated condition. In this case, the skin produces more sebum to compensate for the deficiency.

But how can you tell if your skin is dehydrated?

There are many signs of dehydrated skin. The most common are a dull, tired and sagging complexion, dryness lines or fine lines that are not age-related, and dark circles under the eyes. In some cases, the skin can also be very sensitive, irritated and rough.

A very reliable indicator is the so-called pinch test. Squeeze your skin on your cheeks or the back of your hand for a few seconds. If the skin does not move directly back to its original position, but a small wrinkle remains that takes longer to smooth out, then your skin is thirsty for water.

What does my skin need when it is dehydrated?

Drinking enough water a day is the foundation for optimal skin health. The German Federal Ministry of Nutrition recommends that adults drink an average of 1.5 litres a day. But with the right skincare routine, you can also give your skin back the moisture it needs to glow again. Moisturising products that can bind water to the skin are the way to go. Serums and creams that contain hyaluronic acid can help, as they retain a lot of moisture and strengthen the skin barrier.
